Prague's New Cathedral Organ
From the Organ World

A Century in the Making: A New Voice for St. Vitus Cathedral

St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague has entered a new musical chapter with the inauguration of a long-awaited pipe organ designed for the extraordinary acoustics of one of Europe’s most iconic Gothic spaces. For decades, the cathedral—set within Prague Castle and visited by millions each year—lacked an instrument capable of fully matching the scale and resonance of its interior.

The new organ replaces an instrument installed in 1931 that never fully met the artistic and acoustic ambitions of the space. A renewed initiative launched in 2012 grew into a wide public effort, supported by thousands of donors across the country and beyond. At its heart stands a shared intention: to restore a powerful and fitting musical voice to the cathedral.

Built by Gerhard Grenzing and assembled after production in Spain, the instrument brings together international craftsmanship and local tradition. Its thousands of pipes are shaped to respond to the cathedral’s unique acoustics, influenced by its stone structure and vast interior. Positioned above the choir on the western wall, it is both a visual and sonic presence within the sacred space. The inauguration also included the symbolic “awakening” of the organ, marking its entry into liturgical and concert life.
