C. B. Fisk organ

The Fisk organ of the Dallas Symphony Hall, built in 1992, combines several European influences in its disposition. A German-Baroque Hauptwerk is joined by a Dutch-inspired Positiv and a French Schwellwerk. The tuba movement (IV. manual) is designed according to the English model of the organ builder Henry Willis. An unusual feature is that a large part of the pedal organ is also playable as a so-called “resonance” organ on either the I. or IV. manual. This complements the Baroque Hauptwerk and makes it a Symphonic Hauptwerk. The organ has a total of 57 stops.

First Congregational Church organ

The double organ in the First Congregational Church in Los Angeles is a true giant – to be precise, the fourth largest organ in the world with 241 stops (349 ranks) and 20,417 pipes. The larger and older part of the organ, the so-called Chancel Organ and the Transept Organ, was built in 1931 by the Skinner Company on both sides of the chancel and on the side galleries of the transept. In 1969, the Schlicker company installed the West Gallery Organ with its monumental prospect of copper pipes. The organ has a total of 18 different sections, all of which can be operated from two identical five-manual general consoles. A true masterpiece of organ building and technical possibilities!

Holtkamp organ

The facade of the Holtkamp organ of the Juilliard School New York, built in 1968, hides nothing, conceals nothing, does not adorn itself, but openly and freely shows the viewer every stop and every partial movement of the organ. The pipes are located on chromatic windchests and these are freely positioned above the stage and partly rotated by 45°. This instrument by Holtkamp has 52 stops and three manuals. Special features are the solo movement (floating division) and the execution of the 12 lowest notes of the Untersatz 32′ as digital (!) sounds.

Paul Jacobs

Paul Jacobs is a citizen of the world on the organ. He has performed on five continents and in all 50 US states. As a 23-year-old, he played Bach’s complete works in an 18-hour concert marathon – but his gigantic repertoire includes old as well as new music. He is the only organist to have received a Grammy Award (in 2011 for a Messiaen album). He has taught at New York’s renowned Juillard School since 2003, serving as head of the organ department since 2004. In 2017, he received an honorary doctorate from Washington and Jefferson College. Stephen Tharp

Stephen Tharp began his international concert career in 1987, still as a teenager, and has since circled the world several times – in more than 60 tours and more than 1500 concerts on major organs – as a virtuoso, chamber musician, lecturer at master classes and jury member. Numerous works have been dedicated to him, he has given numerous world premieres and for selected occasions he also composes himself, for example his “”Easter Fanfares”” for the inauguration of the new tuba high pressure register in Cologne Cathedral. Mark Steinbach

Mark Steinbach has recorded a highly acclaimed album at the Silbermann organ in Dresden’s Hofkirche: “Glass-Bach Dresden” – showing the range of his work: from old to completely new music! He played world premieres by Nico Muhly and Daniel Pinkham, for example. Steinbach’s radius of activity as an organist and lecturer extends above all across the USA and Europe. This was already true in his student days, where he studied at the universities of Kansas and Rochester (Eastman School of Music) in the USA, but also as a Fulbright scholarship holder in Vienna. He was invited as a performer and lecturer at the Xi’an Conservatory of Music in China. Steinbach’s recordings have been featured on American Public Media’s Pipedreams programme. He is currently university organist and custodian of instruments at Brown University, where he also offers seminars in music theory and analysis and holds the position of Distinguished Senior Lecturer in Music.

Christoph Bull

If you need an organist in Hollywood’s dream factory, it’s best to ask Christoph Bull. Born in Mannheim and educated at German universities, Christoph has made Los Angeles his place of work for many years, currently as organist-in-residence at the First Congregational Church. Christoph is also a songwriter and rock musician and combines different musical styles with brilliant ease. At the also visually spectacular organ of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in L.A., he recorded an album that reflects his musical versatility. He “plays” with other artists, for example, in his multimedia show “Organica”.
